ePostcard #67
El Chupacabra

First sighted in Puerto Rico, El Chupacabra is a legendary cryptid with an appetite for goat’s blood. Despite his vampiric ways, he’s been reported as mild mannered with a cheery disposition, however not by any livestock. The Chupacabra is an unlikely predator, ashamed of his need for blood and afraid of human persecution. He keeps to himself, roaming the deserts of North America.

I caught up to El Chupacabra in the Laguna Pueblo of New Mexico. We set up a camera around the San José Spanish Mission, hoping that its late 1600’s architecture would help draw the Chupacabra out, reminding him of his native Puerto Rico. A goat that came to be known as “Steve” acted as bait. The resulting image is the first of its kind. You can clearly see El Chupacabra quietly sneaking up on Steve from behind. Alas, we were unable to capture the actual moment of attack, but donations in Steve’s name can be made to the Heifer International charity.

El Chupacabra has been reproduced in perfect vinyl form by up and coming illustrator/artist Sara Antoinette Martin. Sara studied the Chupacabra extensively in her Debatable Beasties project, teaming with Kidrobot to produce the flocked toy version.

Manifest Hope Gala Close

It been a few weeks since I got back from DC and the inauguration, but I'm still processing the trip. In just three days just under 25,000 people visited the exhibition MANIFEST HOPE: DC, curated by Yosi Sergant. It was humbling to see my work hung alongside other artists who have been at the forefront of a grassroots cultural and political movement.

The exhibition was perhaps described best by Michael Clements, Executive Editor of Washington Life, “the event will be looked back upon in history as the moment when art became recognized as integral in directly impacting campaigns and the political agenda.

I'm truly honored to have been included in the event, and I'm excited to have been in DC to witness firsthand the results of a historical momentum towards hope and reform.

Best Wishes,
Brian
