On April 9th the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles played host to a unique, one-night exhibition. Against giant skeletons of dinosaurs and taxidermy animals, artist Amanda Visell unveiled a new body of work titled Primeval Love. The series of paintings, sculptures, and sketches envisions an alternate course of life on Earth, one where women are stewards of a natural order devoid of oppression and full of mythology. According to Visell, "Well tic toc apocalypse (my last show) for me was the destruction of civilization and the bringers chosen to end it. Sorta like Ghostbusters. But I would say they’re all imagined to be in the past. Primeval Love shows the cleaning crew, trying to get it all together and start over again, but still in Earth's history..." The self-produced, self-invested exhibition is part of Visell's ongoing efforts to foster an independent, artist-driven community. In the hours before the event opened, the museum granted me rare access to one of the large dioramas in the African Mammal wing. I took the opportunity to interpretively commemorate the show and document another one of Amanda's contributions to the Art-Toy movement. Releasing soon, the What-Did-I-Eat-Ephunt is Visell's second, independently produced vinyl toy. In addition to solo projects, Amanda's work is also supported by Art-Toy powerhouse Kidrobot. The latest collaboration is a series of mini figures based upon characters from her tic toc apocalypse show mentioned above. After years of mutual admiration, Kidrobot and I have found an opportunity to work on a collaboration of our own. I'm extremely excited that McCarty PhotoWorks has added Kidrobot as a client. A series of commissioned photos will be revealed over the coming months. Hope you enjoy,
