De-Evolution

I've been extraordinarily busy lately while working on some top secret projects. Aside from taking a toll on sleep, it also means that there isn't any new work that can be shown yet. So instead of skipping another month, I took a small break while at a desert location last week to shoot something just for fun.

The figure above is a new favorite. Minneapolis gallery OX-OP has pulled in some amazing artists for their third collaboration with Toy2R. Not only are friends Attaboy and Joe Ledbetter represented, but this series of Qees also marks the first time DEVO's Booji Boy has come to life as a toy.

Any DEVO fan will get the irony. The character was created in 1975 to be satirical commentary on the infantile regression seen in Western culture - such as adults collecting toys.

Funny enough, Booji Boy officially resigned a few months ago. After 32 years and the elevation of regression into expression, perhaps it was time to hang up his spurs after a job well done.

Just a reminder that this Thursday is the opening reception for Beyond Ultraman at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Both the PMCA and the Los Angeles Toy, Doll, and Amusements Museum have pulled out the stops for this first museum show that seriously examines toys as an artistic medium.
