Friends With You

Five years ago, when I was just starting my studio, I had the pleasure of shooting some of the first art-toys from the visionary duo of Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, otherwise known as FriendsWithYou. In the time since, they have been responsible for spreading epic amounts of magic, luck, and friendship throughout the art community and the world at large.

When Hi Fructose magazine asked me to shoot FriendsWithYou’s newest collaboration with STRANGEco, I jumped at the opportunity…so to speak. Coco, Fluffy Pop, Malfi, Buddy Chub, Popo and Mr. TTT are seen above as they play on the El Mirage Dry Lakebed. The photo below reveals a little bit of the magic behind the scenes, as well as my assistant Michael. We spent a long time waiting for the light and an even longer time picking up the 144 bouncy balls in-between exposures, but the entire shoot was a blast.

The characters come from the Wish Come True series of toys, releasing later this month at a launch party in NYC. In true FriendsWithYou fashion, the figures are playable art objects, designed with built-in bell chimes and weighted bottoms. The rocking motion and subtle, soothing sound is meant not only for adult collectors but also for children as young as 18-months.

Keep an eye out for Hi Fructose #7 hitting stands in March!! In addition to this shot, I'm contributing a few other surprises.
