ePostcard #81
Dunny

A recent shoot for Kidrobot gave me an opportunity to pay homage to a group of photographers that hugely influenced me, some of whom I was fortunate enough to study under. The New York School isn't an educational institution; it's a loosely associated group of photographers that documented urban life on the streets of New York City in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, and early 60's. Images by Helen Levitt, Diane Arbus, Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank, Charles Harbutt, and other greats simultaneously provided social commentary while remaining true to distinctly personal visions. Their work explored deep concepts through sometimes playful compositions.

My work is the result of too much time spent in the library, pouring over books like A Way of Seeing, and even more time spent in front of the TV, absorbing the best and worst of animated programming. Frank Kozik's new Dunny character, with his 1930's cartoon styling and depression-era sentimentality, felt like a good bridge between the two.

Art-Toys Special Edition

With the amount of influence that photo books had on me, it still feels a little surreal to have one of my own, even more so that people are snatching it up so fast. The special edition is completely sold out from the publisher. Amazon sold through their stock almost immediately, and aside from a few local retailers, the only remaining copies are available through my store. The regular, 1st edition of the book continues to fly off the shelves as well. Not sure of the actual numbers, but it's well over halfway sold out.

Credit for the mad rush goes to a number of media outlets for spreading the word. Check out very flattering articles on Flavorpill, Boing Boing, SoCal, and 10 Answers.

Finally, huge thanks goes to La Luz de Jesus for hosting a book signing and mini exhibition of my work last week. It was an absolute pleasure meeting fans and spending time in one of my favorite galleries in Los Angeles.

Cheers,
Brian
