Brian announced a new, work-in-progress photo essay and documentary film titled WAR-TOYS. Using Brian’s unique toy photography and principles of play and art therapy, the project will explore firsthand accounts of war from the perspective of children living in its day-to-day reality. Working through local humanitarian organizations in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, WAR-TOYS will focus on a generation of Israelis and Palestinians that has never known an existence without the constant threat of rocket attacks, air strikes, gunfire, explosions, and incursions.

In the April issue of FHM Germany is an article on Brian's work. Because his foreign language skills are a little lacking, Brian had to rely on the wonders of Babelfish to read the piece: “Forced Perspective says the specialist, if a producer or Photographer its spectators by one sent selected camera angle wrong relative importance before-tells lies. That new ones photographer Brian McCarty is a master in this discipline…” Brian isn't sure exactly what he's being called a master of, but it’s flattering all the same.

For those of you that aren't Hello Kitty® superfans, the title Three Apples refers the precise weight of the iconic character as listed in her bio. It's also the title of a current exhibition celebrating Hello Kitty's 35th Anniversary. Hosted by the massive, Harajuku-themed gallery and café Royal/T, Three Apples celebrates all things Hello Kitty through a retrospective and reinterpretation of the character by a variety of contemporary, cutting edge artists. >> 3.31.09 Mark Ryden's YHWH

Toys factor heavily in the work of brilliant pop surrealist painter Mark Ryden, yet Mark chose not to release any toys of his own until now. After a number of false starts dating as far back as 2005, YHWH is being brought into vinyl form by Long Gone John and his Necessaries Toy Foundation. I was flattered to be commission by John to shoot the character for its upcoming premiere.

YHWH is inspired by a god-like figure from Ryden's Bunnies and Bees series. When brainstorming the shot with Mark, it seemed a natural choice to play with elements from the original painting - similar location, girl, lighting, and basic composition. The result can be seen below:

Brian just finished an amazing shoot of "Juke-Bot" from DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's Hard Sell Tour. Brought to life by a dream-team of creative thinkers, the Juke-Bot is designed by internationally renowned street artist and longtime Shadow collaborator Paul Insect, based on conceptual art by Ben Stokes.
